The 22 Major Arcana in order: the Fool's journey

A tarot deck has 78 cards. Twenty-two of them, the Major Arcana, carry the big themes: beginnings, choices, loss, hope, completion. Laid out from 0 to 21 they read as one story, and once you know the story, the cards stop being a list to memorize.

The frame

In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, the one most readers learn on, the Major Arcana are numbered 0 to 21. The Fool is 0, the one who sets out. Every card after is someone or something the Fool meets on the way.

Teachers split the journey into three rows of seven. The first row is the world you are born into and the people who shape you. The second is the tests of adult life. The third is the inner and spiritual work. The Fool stands outside the rows, at the start, and again at the end. You do not have to remember the rows. They just explain why the cards sit in the order they do.

Cards 0 to 7: setting out

  • 0, The Fool. A fresh start, a leap into the unknown with limitless potential. Spontaneity and trust. The whole journey begins here.
  • 1, The Magician. Skill, will, and resourcefulness. Everything you need is already on the table. The card of making something happen.
  • 2, The High Priestess. Intuition, mystery, inner knowledge. What you know without being told. A card that asks you to listen rather than act.
  • 3, The Empress. Abundance, nurturing, beauty, fertility in every sense. Growth that comes from care.
  • 4, The Emperor. Authority, structure, stability, leadership. Rules that hold things up. Order as a form of protection.
  • 5, The Hierophant. Tradition, teaching, spiritual guidance, belonging. The wisdom that is handed down. Sometimes conformity.
  • 6, The Lovers. Love and harmony, and underneath that, a choice. Alignment between what you value and what you do.
  • 7, The Chariot. Determination, willpower, triumph through direction. Opposing forces held together and driven forward.

Cards 8 to 14: the tests

  • 8, Strength. Courage, patience, compassion. Not force. The quiet hand that calms the lion.
  • 9, The Hermit. Introspection, solitude, inner guidance. Stepping back to find your own light.
  • 10, Wheel of Fortune. Cycles, turning points, luck. What goes around. A reminder that the wheel keeps moving, in both directions.
  • 11, Justice. Fairness, truth, accountability, balance. Cause and effect. The card of being honest with yourself.
  • 12, The Hanged Man. Surrender, pause, a new perspective. Letting go to see differently. Waiting that is not wasted.
  • 13, Death. Transformation, endings, renewal. Almost never a literal death. The old form ends so the new one can begin.
  • 14, Temperance. Balance, moderation, patience, blending. Finding the middle path and taking it slowly.

Cards 15 to 21: the inner work

  • 15, The Devil. The shadow self, attachment, temptation. What you are bound to and have not admitted. The chains are loose, which is the point.
  • 16, The Tower. Upheaval, sudden change, revelation. A structure built on a false foundation comes down. Hard, and clarifying.
  • 17, The Star. Hope, inspiration, renewal, serenity. The calm after the Tower. Faith restored.
  • 18, The Moon. Illusion, dreams, the subconscious, uncertainty. Things are not as they seem, and not necessarily worse. Trust your instincts and wait for daylight.
  • 19, The Sun. Joy, success, vitality, radiance. Clarity and warmth. One of the most welcome cards in the deck.
  • 20, Judgement. Rebirth, calling, reckoning. Hearing a call and answering it. Being released from an old judgment of yourself.
  • 21, The World. Completion, achievement, wholeness. The journey ends, and the Fool is ready to set out again.

Reading them

A Major Arcana card in a spread usually marks the theme, the thing the question is really about. The Minor Arcana around it fill in the everyday detail.

Reversed, a Major card does not mean the opposite. It usually means the energy is blocked, still forming, or turned inward. A reversed Tower can be a collapse you are holding off. A reversed Star can be hope you have stopped letting yourself feel.

The best way to learn the 22 is one a day. Draw a card, read its line here, and notice where it shows up before bedtime. In three weeks you will know the story.
