✧ Moon Phases
- New Moon
- Sun and Moon aligned, the dark Moon. A fresh start: set intentions and plant seeds.
- The New Moon is the dark Moon, the Sun and Moon sit in the same part of the sky, so the lit side faces away from us and we see almost nothing. It opens the roughly 29-day lunar cycle, which is why it's the classic moment to set intentions and begin something.
- Waxing Crescent
- The first sliver of light after the New Moon, building momentum and taking first steps.
- A thin, growing sliver of light a few days after the New Moon, 'waxing' simply means growing. It's the first visible light of the cycle: a time to take early steps and build momentum.
- First Quarter
- Half-lit and growing, a decision point. Push through resistance and commit.
- Exactly half the Moon's face is lit and still growing, so it looks like a half-circle. (It's the 'quarter' because the Moon is a quarter of the way through its cycle, not a quarter lit.) Often a decision point: push through the first resistance.
- Waxing Gibbous
- Almost full, refine, adjust, and prepare for the culmination ahead.
- More than half lit and still growing, but not yet full, 'gibbous' means humped or bulging. It's the home stretch before the Full Moon: refine, adjust, and get ready.
- Full Moon
- Sun and Moon opposite, the Moon fully lit. Culmination, clarity, release, and heightened feeling.
- The whole face is lit, with the Sun and Moon on opposite sides of Earth, the peak of the cycle. Things come to a head: a time for clarity, culmination, celebration, or release, and emotions often run higher.
- Waning Gibbous
- Just past full, gratitude, sharing, and giving back.
- Just past full and beginning to shrink, 'waning' means decreasing, but still more than half lit. A softer stretch for gratitude, sharing, and giving back what you've gathered.
- Last Quarter
- Half-lit and shrinking, let go, forgive, and clear away what's finished.
- Half the face is lit again, but now shrinking, the other half-circle, three-quarters through the cycle. A natural time to let go, forgive, and clear away what's finished.
- Waning Crescent
- The final sliver before the New Moon, rest, reflect, and surrender.
- The last thin sliver before the Moon goes dark and the cycle restarts. The quietest phase: rest, reflect, and surrender before the next New Moon.
✧ Sky Events
- Lunation
- A New or Full Moon, the two peaks of the monthly lunar cycle.
- New and Full Moons are the natural turning points of each month. New Moons favor beginnings and intentions; Full Moons bring things to a head, clarity, completion, or release. Noticing them helps you work with the month's rhythm instead of against it.
- ℞Retrograde
- When a planet appears to move backward through the zodiac from Earth's view. A time to review, revise, and revisit, not to launch anew.
- During a retrograde, the themes of that planet turn inward and ask for a second look. It's a natural window to review, revise, finish old business, and reconnect, rather than force brand-new launches. Things you thought were settled can resurface so you can complete them properly.
- ∅Void-of-Course Moon
- The stretch after the Moon's last major aspect until it changes sign. Plans made now tend to fizzle, good for rest and routine, not big launches.
- When the Moon is void-of-course, it has finished its aspects and is 'coasting' before the next sign. Decisions and launches started now often go nowhere or change later. It's a fine window for rest, routine, and wrapping things up, just not for kicking off something you need to stick.
- Sign Change (Ingress)
- When a planet crosses from one zodiac sign into the next, a shift in tone for whatever that planet governs.
- When a planet changes signs, the flavor of whatever it governs shifts too, a Mars ingress, for instance, changes how drive and energy express in the collective. Ingresses are gentle 'chapter turns' in the ongoing story of the sky.
- ◉Eclipse
- A New or Full Moon close to the Moon's nodes, strong enough to dim the Sun or Moon. Eclipses mark accelerated change, endings and beginnings.
- Eclipses are supercharged New or Full Moons that tend to speed things up, fast-forwarding endings, beginnings, and turning points, especially in the areas of your chart they touch. Their effects can unfold over weeks, so it's wiser to respond thoughtfully than to make sudden, drastic moves in the moment.
- Solar Eclipse
- A New Moon eclipse, the Moon blocks the Sun. Often a dramatic fresh start or a door opening.
- A solar eclipse is a potent New Moon, often a doorway opening or a new chapter that arrives faster than usual in the part of life it touches.
- Lunar Eclipse
- A Full Moon eclipse, Earth's shadow falls on the Moon. Often a culmination, revelation, or release.
- A lunar eclipse is a potent Full Moon, often a culmination or revelation that brings something to completion, sometimes surfacing feelings or truths that have been quietly building.
✧ Aspects
- ☌︎Conjunction
- Two planets at the same point, their energies blend and intensify.
- When two planets sit together they act almost as one, blending so closely it can be hard to separate them. In a life this concentrates energy and focus on whatever those two planets represent, powerful, and more intense for it.
- ☍︎Opposition
- Two planets across from each other (180°), a tug-of-war seeking balance.
- An opposition feels like a see-saw between two parts of you (or two people) that each want different things. The work is balance and integration, owning both ends rather than swinging to one, and it often plays out through relationships.
- △Trine
- Two planets 120° apart, easy, harmonious flow and natural talent.
- A trine is easy, flowing support, the two planets cooperate naturally and give talent and grace in that area of life. It feels good, though it can be so effortless you take it for granted instead of developing it.
- □Square
- Two planets 90° apart, friction and tension that drives growth.
- A square is productive friction, two drives at cross-purposes that build tension until you do something with it. It's uncomfortable, but it's the engine of growth, pushing you to develop skill and resolve what's stuck.
- ⚹Sextile
- Two planets 60° apart, opportunity and gentle support, if you act on it.
- A sextile is gentle opportunity, an open door between two planets that rewards initiative. The support is there, but unlike a trine it asks you to actually act on it for the benefit to show up.
- Tightest Aspect
- The tightest aspect is the planetary connection closest to an exact angle, meaning it has the smallest orb. Astrologers usually consider tighter aspects stronger and more noticeable because the planets are interacting with greater precision. This aspect can reveal a core pattern that may show up repeatedly in your personality, relationships, and life experiences.
- An aspect is exact when two planets reach the precise angle for a conjunction, opposition, trine, square, or sextile. The closer the orb is to 0°, the tighter the aspect. Astrologers often examine tight aspects first because their themes tend to be more noticeable, although the rest of the chart still matters.
- Applying
- The aspect is still building, the faster planet is moving toward the exact angle.
- An applying aspect hasn't peaked yet. The faster-moving planet is closing in on the exact angle, so whatever the aspect describes is building and tends to be felt most strongly as it approaches. Astrologers read applying aspects as themes that are arriving, something to prepare for and work with.
- Separating
- The aspect has already peaked, the faster planet is moving past the exact angle.
- A separating aspect has already been exact and the faster planet is now moving away. Its influence is easing, though while it stays within orb it is still active, especially for conjunctions and oppositions. Astrologers read separating aspects as themes that are integrating, what the moment taught is settling in.
- ⚻Quincunx (Inconjunction)
- Two planets 150° apart, a minor aspect of mismatch that asks for ongoing adjustment.
- A quincunx joins two planets with nothing in common, different elements, different modes, so neither can quite see the other. It is a minor aspect read at tight orb, and it shows up as a life area that needs periodic adjustment rather than a problem to solve once. Small course corrections are the medicine.
- ∠Semisquare
- Two planets 45° apart, a minor aspect of low-grade friction.
- A semisquare is a smaller cousin of the square, an itch rather than an obstacle. Read at tight orb, it marks a persistent minor irritation between two drives, the kind that builds skill when you keep working at it instead of ignoring it.
- ⚼Sesquiquadrate
- Two planets 135° apart, a minor aspect of subtle inner tension.
- A sesquiquadrate carries square-family friction at a subtler pitch. Read at tight orb, it points to an inner tension that surfaces under pressure and eases when you give it patience and structure rather than force.
- ⚺Semisextile
- Two planets 30° apart, a minor aspect of quiet neighborly support.
- A semisextile links two planets in neighboring signs. It is a gentle, minor connection, the two energies do not blend easily but they can pass things to each other. Read at tight orb, it adds a quiet line of support between two areas of life.
- QQuintile
- Two planets 72° apart, a minor aspect of natural talent and creative gift.
- The quintile divides the circle by five, and astrologers since Kepler have read it as a signature of innate talent. At tight orb it marks a creative gift between two planets, an ability that feels natural, often visible in what you make, design, or express. Worth asking where it wants an outlet.
- bQBiquintile
- Two planets 144° apart, a minor aspect of refined creative skill.
- The biquintile is the quintile's wider sibling, the same talent signature expressed with more refinement and craft. At tight orb it marks a skill that develops through practice into something distinctly yours, often quietly, without needing an audience.

- The 12th house governs what lives beneath and beyond the everyday: the subconscious, dreams, spirituality, and healing solitude. It asks for rest and retreat, and rewards time spent with your inner life.
✧ Chart Basics
- Out of Bounds
- A planet whose declination sits past 23°27′ north or south, farther from the celestial equator than the Sun ever travels.
- Every planet sits some way north or south of the celestial equator. That angle is its declination. The Sun never goes past 23°27′ either way, and a planet that does is called out of bounds. Astrologers read an out-of-bounds planet as operating outside its usual rules, with more freedom and less restraint in what that planet governs. Only the Moon through Pluto can be out of bounds. More than half of people have at least one, but each planet on its own is unusual.
- Natal Moon Phase
- Your natal Moon phase is the part of the lunar cycle present when you were born, calculated from the angle between the Sun and Moon. For this natal interpretation, the cycle is divided into eight 45-degree phases. Astrologers interpret your phase as a broad pattern in how you begin, develop, share, and complete experiences, and read it alongside your Moon sign and the rest of your birth chart.
- Ephemeris
- The high-precision table of planetary positions your chart is calculated from.
- An ephemeris is a precise record of where every planet sits at any given moment. Astrodites calculates positions with the astronomia package, built on the VSOP87 planetary theory, with JPL tables for Pluto and Chiron. Your placements come from real astronomy, not estimates.
- Natal Chart
- A snapshot of the whole sky at the exact moment and place you were born.
- Your natal (birth) chart maps where the Sun, Moon, and planets sat at your birth time and location. It's the foundation every reading is built on, your personal map of the sky.
- Houses & House Systems
- The 12 'houses' are areas of life; the house system is how a chart is sliced into them.
- Houses split the chart into twelve areas of life, self, money, home, relationships, career, and so on. Different traditions divide them in different ways, and that method is called the house system.
- Whole Sign Houses
- Astrodites' default house system, each sign is one whole house.
- In Whole Sign houses, each of the twelve signs is exactly one house, counted from your Rising sign. It's the oldest and clearest system, and the one Astrodites uses for natal charts.
- Orb
- How far from exact an aspect can be and still count.
- Two planets rarely line up to the exact degree. The orb is the allowance, how close is 'close enough' for an aspect to matter. A tighter orb means a stronger, more exact connection.
- Transit
- Where a planet is right now, touching a point in your birth chart.
- A transit is a current planetary position making contact with your natal chart. Transits are how astrology talks about timing, what today's, or this year's, sky is activating in your chart.
- Synastry
- Comparing two birth charts to see how two people relate.
- Synastry lays two people's charts over each other to see where their planets connect, where you click and where you clash. It's what powers the Compatibility tool.
- Composite Chart
- A single 'relationship chart' built from two people's midpoints.
- A composite chart blends two charts into one by taking the midpoint between each pair of planets, a chart for the relationship itself, treated as its own entity.
✧ Planetary Dignities
- Planetary Dignity
- How well-placed a planet is in its current sign, its strength and ease there.
- Planetary dignity is the classical measure of a planet's condition in a sign, its strength and state. A planet in its own sign (domicile) or exaltation works with ease and full strength; in the opposite sign (detriment or fall) it has to work harder to express itself. It isn't 'good' or 'bad', just the terrain that planet is walking on.
- Domicile (Rulership)
- The sign a planet rules, its home, where it's most comfortable and strong.
- When a planet is in domicile it's in the sign it rules, like being at home, it expresses naturally and at full strength. The Sun is at home in Leo, the Moon in Cancer, Mars in Aries and Scorpio.
- Detriment
- The sign opposite a planet's home, where it works harder and expresses less easily.
- A planet is in detriment when it sits opposite the sign it rules, away from home, so it has to work harder to express its nature. It's a tender placement, not a doomed one, Mars in Taurus, for instance, simply acts more slowly and deliberately than the fiery Mars of Aries.
- Exaltation
- A sign where a planet is especially honoured and works well, a welcomed guest.
- Exaltation is a sign where a planet is held in high regard and expresses with notable grace and strength, like an honoured guest. The Sun is exalted in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, Jupiter in Cancer, Saturn in Libra.
- Fall
- The sign opposite a planet's exaltation, where it feels less supported.
- A planet in fall sits opposite its exaltation, so it draws less support from the sign and has to find its strength from within. Like detriment, it's a harder placement to work with, not a verdict, Saturn in Aries, for example, learns patience the hard way.
Where each planet is strong or stretched. A planet is at its easiest in its domicile or exaltation, and has to work a little harder in its detriment or fall.
| Planet | Domicile | Exaltation | Detriment | Fall |

Scorpio, Aquarius, and Pisces have two rulers: the traditional ruler (Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, listed above) and a modern co-ruler (Pluto, Uranus, Neptune), added after those planets were discovered. We lead with the traditional ruler and show the modern one as a convention. Modern astrology gives the outer planets a ruling sign but no settled exaltation, detriment, or fall, so those stay blank, we don't assign a dignity the tradition never set.
✧ Numerology
- Life Path Number
- The most important number, from your birth date, your overall life journey and purpose.
- Your Life Path describes the central theme of this lifetime, your natural strengths, the lessons you keep meeting, and the kind of road that fulfills you. It's the backbone of a numerology reading, much the way your Sun sign anchors an astrology chart.
- Expression (Destiny) Number
- From your full birth name, your natural talents and what you're here to become.
- Your Expression number, sometimes called the Destiny number, shows the abilities and potential you arrived with and are meant to develop. Where the Life Path is the road you travel, the Expression is the vehicle you travel it in.
- Soul Urge (Heart's Desire)
- From the vowels in your name, your inner motivations and what you truly want.
- Your Soul Urge is the quiet 'why' beneath your choices, what your heart actually craves and what brings deep satisfaction. When life aligns with it you feel fulfilled; when it doesn't, something feels missing even when everything looks fine on paper.
- Personality Number
- From the consonants in your name, the side of you others meet first.
- Your Personality number is the outer impression you give off, the 'first handshake' people experience before they know you well. It acts like a filter over your fuller self, shaping how you come across and what you let show early on.
- Birthday Number
- The day of the month you were born, a specific gift you bring.
- Your Birthday number is a focused talent woven into your larger path, a particular strength that comes naturally and supports your Life Path.
- Personal Year
- Where you are in the repeating 1-9 cycle this year, the theme of your current chapter.
- Your Personal Year sets the tone for the year ahead, moving through a nine-year cycle from fresh starts (1) to completion and release (9). Knowing it helps you work with the year's natural current, when to begin, build, rest, or let go.
- Master Numbers (11, 22, 33)
- Heightened, high-potential numbers held to a higher standard.
- Master Numbers carry an intensified version of their root (11→2, 22→4, 33→6), greater potential paired with greater challenge. They often mark a steeper learning curve and a pull to operate at a higher level, in service of something beyond yourself.
- Pinnacles
- Four life-stage cycles, each carrying a number and a focus.
- Your Pinnacles divide life into four long seasons, each emphasizing a particular number's lessons and opportunities. They reveal what each chapter is really about, so you can meet its theme rather than be caught off guard by it.
- Challenge Numbers
- Numbers marking the lessons you're here to work through.
- Your Challenge numbers name the recurring hurdles to grow past, the inner work of your path. They aren't punishments but the specific muscles this lifetime is building, and meeting them is where a lot of your growth happens.
✧ Angel Numbers
- Repeating Numbers
- Number sequences you keep noticing (like 111 or 11:11), read as nudges to pay attention.
- Angel numbers are repeating sequences that seem to catch your eye again and again. In the tradition they're read as gentle affirmations or nudges, a cue to notice your thoughts and direction in that moment. Each common sequence carries a meaning; an unfamiliar one is read from the meaning of its individual digits.
- 111
- Alignment and new beginnings, a manifestation window.
- 111 is read as a moment of alignment, when your thoughts and your path line up and a doorway opens for new beginnings. It's an encouragement to focus on what you genuinely want, because intention takes root more easily now.
- 222
- Balance, partnership, and trust the path.
- 222 speaks to harmony and patience, relationships, cooperation, and trusting that things are unfolding as they should. A reminder to keep faith and stay balanced while the seeds you've planted grow.
- 333
- Support, growth, and creative expansion.
- 333 is read as encouragement and support, a green light for creativity, self-expression, and growth, often with the sense that you're not walking it alone.
- 444
- Stability, protection, and presence.
