Mercury retrograde: what it actually means, and whether it affects you

Mercury retrograde gets blamed for everything from a lost email to a lost week. Some of that is fair. Most of it is not. Here is what the retrograde really is, the dates for this one and the next three, and the honest answer to whether it affects you.

This retrograde, in Pacific time

  • October 24, early morning: Mercury stations retrograde at 20°59' Scorpio.
  • November 13, morning: Mercury stations direct at 5°02' Scorpio.
  • November 29: Mercury passes 20°59' Scorpio again and the shadow period ends.

The whole retrograde happens inside Scorpio. Venus is retrograde in the same part of the sky this month, and both planets station direct on November 13. That is an unusually crowded day of turning around.

What Mercury retrograde is

Mercury orbits the Sun faster than Earth does. Three or four times a year it laps us, and for about three weeks it appears to move backward against the stars. It does not actually reverse. It is a trick of perspective, the same way a faster car seems to drift backward as you pass it.

Astrologers have read that backward motion as a period of review for as long as there has been astrology. Mercury rules how we think, speak, write, travel, trade, and sort information. When it is retrograde, those things get a second pass. Plans change. Messages cross. Something you signed needs another read. Something you lost turns up.

The useful frame is the "re" verbs: review, revise, reconnect, repair, reconsider, rest. The retrograde is good for those and less good for launching, signing, and deciding for keeps.

What it is not

It is not three weeks of bad luck. Thousands of people sign contracts, start jobs, and travel smoothly during every Mercury retrograde. The tradition says to slow down and double-check, not to hide.

It is not a reason to put your life on hold. If something has to be signed, read it twice and sign it. If you have to travel, leave early and keep a copy of everything.

And it does not land on everyone the same way. Which brings us to the real question.

Does it affect you?

Mercury retrograde is personal when it touches your chart. Three things decide that:

  • Where it happens. This retrograde runs from 21 back to 5 degrees of Scorpio. If you have a planet or an angle in that range, Mercury is crossing it three times, and you will feel it in that part of your life.
  • Which house it falls in. Scorpio sits in one house of your chart. If it is your third house, expect communication and short trips to get the review. Tenth house, your work and reputation. Seventh, a partnership. The house names the subject.
  • Your own Mercury. If you were born with Mercury retrograde, which about one person in five was, retrograde periods often feel like your natural pace. If your Mercury is in Scorpio, Gemini, or Virgo, you tend to notice these more.

If none of those apply, this retrograde is background weather for you. Back up your files, be patient with other people's mix-ups, and carry on.

The next Mercury retrogrades, Pacific time

  • February 9 to March 3, 2027: from 5°59' Pisces back to 20°55' Aquarius.
  • June 10 to July 4, 2027: from 6°21' Cancer back to 27°28' Gemini.
  • October 7 to October 28, 2027: from 4°55' Scorpio back to 19°19' Libra.

Write them down, and write down where those signs fall in your chart. Then you will know ahead of time which ones are yours.
