Planets, signs & houses: the three building blocks
Almost everything in a chart is a combination of three things: a planet (what), a sign (how), and a house (where in life).
Planets, the what
Planets are the moving parts of a chart, each governing an area of inner life. The Sun is your core identity and vitality; the Moon, your emotions and instincts; Mercury, how you think and communicate; Venus, how you love and what you value; Mars, your drive and how you act. The slower planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, shape growth, discipline, change, dreams, and transformation.
When a reading says "your Venus," it means the part of you that relates and appreciates beauty, wherever that planet lives in your chart.
Signs, the how
The twelve zodiac signs color the style of whatever planet is in them. Each sign blends an element, fire (spark), earth (substance), air (ideas), water (feeling), with a modality: cardinal (initiating), fixed (sustaining), or mutable (adapting).
So Mars (drive) in Aries (cardinal fire) acts fast and direct, while Mars in Taurus (fixed earth) moves slowly and steadily. Same planet, different flavor.
Houses, the where
If planets are the actors and signs are their costumes, the twelve houses are the stage, the areas of life where the action plays out. The 1st house is you and your approach to life; the 7th, partnerships; the 10th, career and public role; the 4th, home and roots, and so on around the wheel.
Astrodites uses Whole Sign houses by default, the oldest, clearest system, where each sign is exactly one house counted from your Rising. A planet's house tells you which part of life it most naturally touches.
Putting it together
Read any placement as a sentence: planet + sign + house. "Venus in Gemini in the 3rd" becomes "how I love (Venus), expressed curiously and through words (Gemini), in the area of communication and learning (3rd)."
You don't need to memorize anything, once you see the pattern, the whole chart starts to read like a language.
